Tea definition: what "Tea" means and examples

February 9, 2026

A slang term for gossip, scandalous information, or the "inside story" regarding a person or event.

To "spill the tea" is to share juicy news about someone's private life. It originally comes from Black drag culture and has become a staple of Gen Z language. "The tea" can be good or bad, but it’s always interesting. If your child is "sipping the tea," they are quietly enjoying hearing the gossip without being the one telling it.

Examples:

  1. "Sit down, I have some major tea to tell you about the wedding."
  2. "What’s the tea? Why did they break up?"
  3. "I’m just here for the tea, I’m not getting involved in the drama."
