Sigma definition: what "Sigma" means and examples

February 9, 2026

A lone wolf leader who is successful and independent, existing outside of traditional social hierarchies.

In the "alpha/beta" personality trope, a Sigma is seen as the coolest tier because they don't care about social standing. They are often quiet, self-reliant, and highly competent. For boys especially, "Sigma" has become a badge of honour for being an independent thinker, though it is sometimes associated with "grindset" culture (working hard in silence).

Examples:

  1. "Grandad is a bit of a sigma, he just does his own thing and everyone respects him."
  2. "He’s trying so hard to have a sigma aesthetic by being mysterious."
  3. "That was a total sigma move to walk away from that argument."
