Trap Phone definition: what "Trap Phone" means and examples

February 9, 2026

A secondary, often low-cost mobile phone used to keep specific contacts or activities hidden from view.

Historically, this term comes from the "trap" (a place where illegal goods are sold), referring to a burner phone that is difficult to trace. Today, if a teenager mentions a trap phone, they usually mean a secondary device they keep "off the grid" to bypass parental controls or to message people without their primary phone’s logs being seen.

Examples:

  1. "I found a cheap trap phone in his drawer and I'm quite concerned."
  2. "He uses his trap phone for games so his main battery doesn't die."
  3. "You don't need a trap phone if you aren't hiding anything from us."
