Based definition: what "Based" means and examples

February 10, 2026

A term of respect for someone staying true to their values regardless of opinion.

To be "based" is to be unapologetically yourself, especially when your opinion might be unpopular or controversial. It is a term of respect for someone who stays true to their beliefs regardless of what others think. While it can sometimes be used in political contexts, among teenagers it usually just refers to someone being "real" or "cool" for not following the crowd. It celebrates individuality and the courage to be different in a world of trends.

Examples:

  1. "I know everyone hates that movie, but I love it." "Based."
  2. "He decided to quit social media for a month, which is honestly based."
  3. "She wore a vintage suit to prom and it was a based move."
