Low Key definition: what "Low Key" means and examples

February 9, 2026

Used to describe a subtle feeling or secret desire that someone doesn't want to overstate.

Low key is used when you want to admit something without making a big deal out of it. It’s for those feelings that are "simmering under the surface." For example, if someone "low key" likes a person, they have a small crush they aren't shouting about. It is the opposite of being "extra" or dramatic. It’s a way to be honest while remaining cool and collected.

Examples:

  1. "I low key think we should just stay in and watch a film."
  2. "I’m low key worried about the maths test tomorrow."
  3. "He's low key the funniest person in our year."
