Dry definition: what "Dry" means and examples

February 12, 2026

A description of a conversation or person that is boring, unenthusiastic, or lacking effort.

If a text conversation is "dry," it means one person is giving one-word answers like "k" or "lol" and not contributing to the flow. It is the ultimate sign of disinterest or a lack of social skill. No one wants to be a "dry texter." Among teenagers, having a dry conversation is a reason to stop talking to someone altogether. It implies that the person is either not worth the effort or is simply too boring to engage with. It is a critique of a person’s social "energy."

Examples:

  1. "I stopped replying to him because his texts were so dry; I was doing all the work."
  2. "The party was a bit dry until the music actually started to improve."
  3. "Sorry if I'm being dry, I've just had a really long day at school and I'm exhausted."
